Life Transitions

Leaving a relationship, grieving the loss of a loved one or choosing a different path in life can leave you feeling overwhelmed, sad and confused. The ability to talk through your struggles, doubts and fears can make these adjustments feel more manageable. If you’ve recently made a life transition or you are considering a big change, we can help you handle this with more ease.

Depression

Do you often experience the following: low mood, anger, sadness, irritability, helplessness, sleep disturbance and/or hopelessness? These can be symptoms of depression. Experiencing depression can lead to you feeling like you’re lazy, weak or lacking in motivation, but it is much more complex than that. Depression is a real condition that goes beyond everyday stress and sadness. We can help you manage it.

Trauma

Have you experienced trauma in your life, either recently or a long time ago? Do you experience distressing memories of the traumatic event(s)? Do you have recurrent dreams directly or indirectly related to the traumatic event(s)? Do you experience flashbacks where you feel or act as if you were re-experiencing the event again? Are your relationships impacted by your experiences? Trauma can be extremely challenging to manage and can impact every area of your life leaving you feeling detached from others, on guard all the time, unable to relax and not able to enjoy daily life. Our trauma therapists are ready to listen and help you find ways to work through your past or recent traumas.

Chronic Pain

Do you experience ongoing pain on a regular basis? Perhaps you were in an accident, had surgery or have lasting adverse effects from an illness or medical treatment. From your chronic pain, do you feel fatigued, have a loss of appetite, sleep disturbances, fluctuating moods, feelings of helplessness, loss of identity, frustration, depression, or anxiety? Feeling any combination of these can impact your quality of life. We can help you learn more about how your brain processes pain and how to manage your symptoms to improve your quality of life.

Grief

Grief is an inevitable, inescapable part of life. You may experience grief from the death of someone you knew, the loss of a relationship, or any other big shift in your life. Are you experiencing a combination of denial, anger, bargaining or depression? We can help you feel heard and validated during this difficult time.

Treatment Approaches & Modalities

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

CBT is a therapeutic approach which helps people learn practical skills and strategies to manage situations that arise on a day-to-day basis. It is based on changing thoughts and beliefs in order to change behaviours. With CBT, you learn to identify thought distortions, see thoughts as separate from what is factually happening, and open up your mindset to other viewpoints. It helps form less rigid thinking styles. CBT is an effective part of treatment for many conditions including, but not limited to: anxiety, depression, eating disorders, post traumatic stress disorder and phobias. If you feel you would benefit from CBT, our therapists are ready to listen and help you identify the areas of thought that are contributing to difficult patterns in your life.

Art Therapy

According to the Canadian Art Therapy Association, “Art therapy combines the creative process and psychotherapy, facilitating self-exploration and understanding. Using imagery, colour and shape as part of this creative therapeutic process, thoughts and feelings can be expressed that would otherwise be difficult to articulate.” Art Therapists are master’s level trained professionals who work with children, adolescents and adults to help people express themselves through creativity. Experience in art is not required to participate in art therapy. If you feel you would like to try art therapy, or you have tried traditional talk therapy before but found it difficult to express yourself verbally, our art therapist is ready to help you.

Harm Reduction

Harm reduction is a general approach where the goal is to reduce the level of harm an individual engages in while facing difficulties in their life. When we face challenges, we often develop coping mechanisms that add to the harm rather than reduce it. A harm reduction strategy can be applied to suicidal ideation, self-harm, disordered eating and many other difficulties. As the name suggests, its aim is to reduce harm. If you are experiencing harmful impacts from choices you are making or habits you have established, our therapists can help you come up with a plan to decrease the harm you are experiencing so that you can begin to feel increased control in your life again.

Interoceptive Exposure Therapy

Interoceptive exposure means exposure to bodily sensations. At any moment we can be consciously aware of what we are feeling, thinking, doing and what is going on in our bodies. Sometimes this conscious awareness increases anxiety and leads to fear and then avoidance. In this form of therapy, clients work through individualized exercises to let go of fears associated with the bodily sensations they have begun to hyperfocus on. This form of therapy can be used to treat panic disorders and phobias, as well as anxious behaviours. If you have decreased your interaction with others or with the world around you as a result of your thoughts or feelings or fears, we can help you work through this to live a better, fuller life again.

Narrative Therapy

Narrative therapy is a non-blaming approach that believes people are experts in their own lives. In this form of therapy, stories are central to an understanding of the narrative individuals live through. We can help you by looking at these narratives and changing the script so you can shift the trajectory of your life.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is a psychotherapy treatment that helps clients access and process traumatic memories and other difficult experiences. The therapist directs lateral eye movements (or sometimes other stimuli like hand tapping) while guiding the client through memories to make new associations and adaptive memories. Our therapists with specialized EMDR training can help process long standing difficult or traumatic memories.
